Can I convert
my wood-burning fireplace to natural gas or propane?
Converting wood-burning fireplaces to gas is very popular
because of the convenience and efficiency of a gas fireplace
insert. In most cases, conversions can be done but each
situation is unique. We can send a hearth specialist
to your home to determine whether a conversion is possible
in your case.

| Why
should I convert to a gas fireplace instead of using
a wood-burning fireplace?
With a wood-burning fireplace, you have to buy wood,
then haul it into your garage and into your home whenever
you want to build a fire. Plus, you have to start up
the fire, keep it going, wait for it to burn down, and
then clean up the ashes. With a gas fireplace, all you
do is press a button and you get warm, flickering flames
that look so real, you'd think you were burning wood.
And there's no messy clean up. Plus, gas fireplaces
are 70%-80% efficient, as opposed to only 10%-25% for
wood-burning fireplaces. And the operation of a gas
fireplace can cost as little as 25% of the cost of burning
wood.
Of
course, there are also environmental benefits with natural
gas. We use natural gas in the same form in which it
comes from the earth; therefore it requires no expensive,
pollution-causing processing. Also, the supply of natural
gas in the United States is plentiful. And natural gas
gives off almost no emissions. That's why it's called
"the most environmentally clean of all fossil fuels." |

| How
is a gas fireplace installed?
Direct vent or sealed-combustion gas fireplaces can
be vented either through an outside wall or through
the roof. Building codes and manufacturer specifications
may dictate where you are able to install your fireplace.
We will send an experienced hearth specialist to your
home to help determine the best location for proper
working of your fireplace. |
| |
| Can
I install a gas fireplace in any room in my home?
Many new houses are being built with fireplaces in bedrooms,
kitchens and other areas of the home. New gas fireplaces,
in general, are very flexible and can be installed almost
anywhere, since there is no need for a chimney. So you
can enjoy the warmth and convenience of a gas fireplace
in almost any room. |
| |
| Will
a fireplace increase the value of my home?
According to the Hearth Products Association, a hearth
product remains one of the most desired amenities in
a home that will add value to it. And according to some
surveys that have been completed, you'll receive over
an estimated 130% return on your investment at resale.
|
| |
| Will
my fireplace operate if the electricity goes out?
Yes, because our fireplaces, stoves and inserts have
standing pilot lights. These are millivolt systems that
don't require electricity to function. You can use your
fireplace as an auxiliary heating source during power
outages. |
| |
| How
much heat does a gas fireplace provide?
Gas fireplaces give off heat, but the amount is dependent
on the type of glass used and the BTU of the fireplace.
A fireplace with a 21,000 BTU input, at about 70% efficiency,
can heat up to 1,000 square feet in the average home.
If you plan to use the fireplace as your primary heat
source, it is recommended that it be connected to a
thermostat. |
| |
| How
much does it cost to operate a gas fireplace?
This depends primarily on the amount of time you use
your fireplace. The average cost of a therm (100,000
BTUs) of gas in the Twin Cities has been about 50 cents.
Therefore, the cost to operate a 25,000 BTU fireplace
for one hour would be approximately 12 cents. Using
natural gas fireplaces can cost as little as 25% of
the cost of burning wood. |
| |
| How
efficient are gas fireplaces?
Most new gas fireplaces and inserts burn with a thermal
efficiency of 70% or higher. Efficiency will vary depending
on venting applications. |
| |

| |
| How
long after I buy my fireplace will you be able to install
it?
During off-peak months, installation will typically
begin within 5 to 10 days from the time of purchase.
During peak months, it may take us 2 to 5 weeks. If
your purchase includes custom order products such as
cabinetry, brick work or made-to-measure trim, the order
may take longer. |
| |
| How
long will it take to install my new fireplace?
Each installation is unique and varies depending on
amount of finishing work, time of year, and code requirements.
Installation may require two days because many communities
require a 24-hour pressure test on the gas line. This
test is done to ensure there are no leaks in the gas
line. |

|
Can
I purchase a fireplace from Hechler's Mainstreet Hearth
& Home and install it myself?
Yes, as long as there are no local or municipal restrictions
in your area. However, manufacturers recommend that
gas hearth products be installed by qualified technicians
for safety reasons and to avoid unnecessary service
calls due to products not being installed to manufacturer's
specifications. |
| |
| What
is the warranty?
Warranties vary depending upon the manufacturer and
model. Please see specific manufacturer sections for
more detailed information. |
| |
| Will
the glass on my fireplace be hot?
Yes. Caution should be taken with children and pets.
|
| |
| How
do I maintain my fireplace?
Most manufacturers recommend annual maintenance by a
qualified technician. Additionally, you should clean
the glass after the break-in period and, after that,
at least once a year depending on how often you use
the fireplace. |
| |
| How
much does a fireplace, insert or stove cost?
Prices vary by product, brand, installation requirements
and the finishing options you choose. A store visit
is the best way to get an estimate. |
